A Tribute to Home: Behind the Scenes - solo show 2017

11" X 14"; mixed media, including fabric and acrylic paint; 2013; Karen Lockert

Here begins the first of a new series of occasional blog posts about my art, as it has evolved, and is continuing to evolve.  At this point, no guarantees, but it might behoove you to roll around in my website for awhile and read the blogs from ages past, if you want to get a better picture of the history of my "art becoming".

A simple statement of the work I will be discussing here: I make evocative mixed-media paintings of vernacular Russian River (Gerneville) architecture for sensitive home-dwellers and owners of vacation homes.

                          Right: Mystic Dreamfield; 20" X 30" Karen Lockert, 2013; $400

At Guerneville's 1st Friday Artwalk, on November 3, 2017, the West County Health Center in the town of Guerneville, CA, hosted a solo show in their waiting room.

The following article was published in our local paper, the Gazette:

When you walk into the room, a friendly person offers you a cup of hot cider; a display of an unlikely assortment of amateur artworks is displayed on a chair; at a table nearby, a half-dozen or so people are busy with scissors and glue sticks, while others are engaged in a lively conversation with the guest of honor.

Artist receptions, typically, are wine-and-cheese affairs, where people stand, meet the artist, and make small talk as they peruse the paintings on the walls. However, at Guerneville’s November 3 “1st Friday Art Walk” event, local artist, Karen Lockert’s opening reception at the West County Health Center, is somewhat different.

Left: Visitors create little houses to take home with them.

Featured at this event, along with the aforementioned cider, and healthy food, is a selection from Lockert’s “Home” series of mixed media interpretations of some of West County’s “ordinary” vintage buildings – homes and businesses, unique to this area.

Attendees/visitors arrived, on this drizzly evening, wearing their “down home” casual clothing, and created artwork of their own, little house-shaped party favors that they were invited to take home with them, and to celebrate the Center’s six-month anniversary since re-opening after the January, 2016 fire that devastated the original building.

Left: guests view Karen Lockert's paintings, as well as the artwork of some of the health center's clients.

The Health Center, which is located at the corner of 3rd and Church Streets, is open daily from 10:am to 6:00 pm, and closes at 5:00 pm on Fridays.  Karen Lockert is available to host visitors for the duration of the show, which is scheduled to close December 31, 2017. She can be reached at [email protected], or through this website or on Facebook.
